September 1, 2017 Spotlight Tutor-Mentor
This week’s Spotlight Tutor-Mentor is Kalai Chong! Kalai teaches Math and English in Brampton. Kalai is committed to helping her students understand the value of hard work, and fulfil their potential. We asked her a few questions about what makes her such a great Tutor-Mentor.
I love watching my kids become more and more confident when they answer a question right that they were really struggling with. Seeing their humble and shy reactions when they get kudos is so fun!
I enjoy teaching English for my high school kids. I love essay writing and research. Watching them learn to form and defend their own opinions is incredible. Sometimes I’m blown away by how eloquent and passionate their writing is.
I’ve been teaching my (foster) student since he was halfway through grade 8. He really struggled with his work, didn’t particularly care about school, and we were using anywhere from grades 3-6 curriculum to focus on the basics. Then in his second semester of grade nine he showed me an assignment that got LEVEL 4 PLUS!!! He was so shy about it but really proud. I immediately told his foster-mom and we celebrated. It was an amazing feeling to see the progress of his development and confidence. Now he’s fully committed to school and only wants to improve and excel.
I love being creative so I’ll work on my photography skills, designing spaces, weird organization, and new makeup looks just for fun 🙂
