October 2, 2017 Spotlight Tutor-Mentor
This week’s Spotlight Tutor-Mentor is Giuliana Rea! Giuliana teaches a little bit of everything in downtown Toronto. She’s well-versed in a number of subjects, and draws on her expertise in all areas to help students see the big picture and be passionate about learning! We asked Giuliana a few questions about what makes her such a great Tutor-Mentor.
I love the mentoring part of my job! It’s not enough that my kids do better in their academics. For me, the most rewarding part of what I do is seeing their confidence blossom as they learn to become comfortable with those tough math questions or with their writing skills. That confidence becomes a part of them and I love watching them grow in the comfortable, confident person I know they can be!
I’ll teach anything and everything! My favourite subjects to teach are probably English, French, Math and Science. These are all the areas that I am deeply passionate about and I love passing on that passion to my kids. Each area requires a different style of teaching, and I love to mix abstract thinking with structural problem solving skills when I teach.
My favourite moments as Tutor-Mentor are just after the kids have had their ‘lightbulb’ moment. Once they’ve grasped the concept, they start to put the puzzle pieces together. They start to effortlessly connect and apply what they’ve learned to other questions, other units, even other disciplines! It’s awesome watching them understand Physics one moment, then all of a sudden apply Newton’s Third Law to their English reading of ‘Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are dead’ in the next. (True Story!) There’s no feeling like it;it leaves you speechless!
When I am not writing fiction novels, I am reading. And when I am not reading, I’m probably dancing.
